Your Guide to the Texas Tax Free Weekend

Posted In: Education

The upcoming Texas Tax Free Weekend will help parents save money on school supplies and clothing for the new school year. Today on the blog, Cambridge Crossing is sharing some tips to help you navigate the tax-free holiday!

Texas Tax Free Weekend Info

The annual Texas sales tax-free holiday takes place Aug. 5-7. For those who are unfamiliar with the tax holiday, Texas shoppers will able to buy clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 tax free during this weekend.

To encourage safe shopping, the Texas Comptroller’s office is reminding shoppers that in addition to in-store purchases, all purchases made online, by telephone, mail or custom order will be tax free as long as the items are ordered between Aug. 5-7.

What Items Are Tax Free?

Items that qualify for a tax exemption must be priced under $100. School supplies such as binders, pens, notebooks, backpacks and much more fall into the qualifying category.

Most clothing and footwear are also tax free, but keep in mind most accessories, purses, wallets and jewelry do not qualify. While athletic jerseys and caps are tax free, you should note that athletic items and footwear such as cleats, gloves, shoulder pads, shin guards and more do not qualify.

Another item you may not have known qualifies during the tax holiday: diapers and baby clothes! Check out the full list here.

Shopping Online

Many online retailers, including major retailers like Walmart, Target and Amazon, will be turning off taxes on qualifying items for customers shopping during the Texas Tax Free Weekend. When you’re shopping online during the tax-free weekend, make sure not to hide your location in your browser so you are recognized as shopping in Texas during the tax holiday.

Supporting Local Businesses

If you’re trying to avoid going into stores but your favorite local boutique does not offer online shopping, try calling ahead to inquire about taking orders by phone or email for curbside pickup. Many Texas businesses are adapting to the changing shopping climate and are prepared to help shoppers.
